The city of Naryan-Mar began its history with the construction of the port in 1859. Merchant Mikhail Sidorov was the one who organized this idea. One of the legends is connected with the appearance of the idol of Wishes. And it says that once upon a time a Wise Shaman lived in this area. People often turned to him for help, but the Shaman looked for love and compassion in their eyes and did not find it. Then he decided to help people in this way: he went on a team of white deer to the Sacred Forest to choose the tree necessary for his idea. Having brought the tree to his raw-hide-tent, the Shaman prayed for a long time to Numu, the Nenets god.
After that, he created the idol of Wishes, cutting it out of that very tree. The Shaman installed the idol so that he faced the rising sun. And he told people this way: Before you make a wish, think carefully. If you wish good, think well, and if you wish a bad thing to someone, remember that this will set a trap for yourself.
A lot of time has passed since the wise Shaman said so and offered the first sacrifice to the idol. To this day, the words are known to the indigenous people and they are passed down through generations. People come to the idol of Wishes with requests for health, protection and patronage.
